Making the floating kitchen shelves, cut the door in half lengthwise with a circular saw. Make sure you have a ruler guide clamp to the door so that you cut is straight. For shorter boards, cut half the door to the desired length. Sand any edges that are rough. Measure the width of the hollow space in the door. Attach the cut-to-measure 2 x 4 to the wall with screws directly into the studs. Slide the board on the 2 x 4 to make sure it fits. Spread wood glue on top of the 2 x 4 on the inner wall and the underside of the shelf. Nail the board to the 2 x 4 using small finish nails or brads. Start at the center and working out. Space the nails evenly along the shelf.
